Transmission projects for pvt power operators

After the successful run with ultra mega power projects, the government has now turned its attention to attract private players in the transmission segment. Returning the faith that the government has reposed in the private sector by identifying 14 transmission projects amounting to Rs 20,000 crore of investment, private transmission developers--both domestic and international--turned up for the bidders’ conference held in the Capital on Thursday.

RPG Transmission, Reliance Energy Transmission, Tata Power, GMR Energy, INABENSA, COBRA, Essar Power, Jaiprakash Associates were among the developers attending the conference.

Fourteen transmission projects, worth anywhere between Rs 200 crore to Rs 4,000 crore, have been identified to be set up by private transmission developers. Till now, private involvement in the transmission segment has been through joint ventures with PowerGrid.

The transmission sector has been attracting the interest of private players. The first ever transmission project to be awarded for development solely by private transmission developers, Western Region System Strengthening Scheme, attracted as many as 28 developers put in their bids to qualify to develop the project. Of these nine companies/consortia qualified to bid for the Rs 19,000 crore project which was awarded on the basis on tariff based competitive bidding
