Steel major, SAIL is planning to modernise and expand its IISCO Steel Plant (ISP) in Burnpur (West Bengal) with an investment of Rs 96 bn. ISP is one of the five steel plants owned by SAIL. ISP, which has current installed capacity of 0.8 million tonnes (MT) will have the biggest blast furnace in the country after completion of the project. Currently, the plant is in a bad shape with its ability to produce barely 0.4 MT. The expansion of ISP is part of SAIL's strategy to raise its production capacity from 14 million tonnes (MT) to around 23 MT by 2010 with an investment of Rs 370 bn.
